Plan My Trip

Where you stay shapes your Saigon. District 1 Phạm Ngũ Lão is backpacker chaos. Đồng Khởi is colonial elegance. District 3 is local life. Thảo Điền is expat comfort. Choose based on your vibe, not just your budget.

District 1 — Phạm Ngũ Lão / Bùi Viện

The backpacker hub. Cheap hostels, street food, loud bars, motorbike chaos. Maximum energy, minimum sleep.

Best for: Solo travelers, budget travelers, first-timers who want to be in the thick of it.

Budget: Dorm beds from 80,000 VND. Private rooms from 300,000 VND.

Our picks:

  • The Common Room Project — best hostel in Saigon. Clean, social, rooftop bar.
  • Long Hostel — cheap, central, no frills. 100,000 VND dorms.
  • Bùi Viện Street Hotel — budget private rooms right on the walking street.

District 1 — Đồng Khởi / Nguyễn Huệ

The upscale side. French colonial buildings, luxury hotels, cocktail bars, designer shops. Saigon's elegant face.

Best for: Couples, mid-range to luxury travelers, business visitors.

Budget: 3-star hotels from 600,000 VND. 5-star from 2,500,000 VND.

Our picks:

  • Hotel Continental — Graham Greene wrote The Quiet American here. Historic, central, surprisingly affordable.
  • Park Hyatt — the best hotel in Saigon. Impeccable service, Nguyễn Huệ location.
  • Liberty Central — solid mid-range, rooftop pool, great District 1 location.

District 3

The local neighborhood. Tree-lined streets, great cafés, authentic food, less tourist noise. Most of us at Saigon Itinerary live in District 3 — it's the neighborhood we'd pick every time.

Best for: Repeat visitors, longer stays, people who want the real Saigon experience.

Budget: Hotels from 400,000 VND. Apartments from 10,000,000–15,000,000 VND/month.

Our picks:

  • Saigon B&B — charming boutique, quiet street, excellent breakfast.
  • Airbnb apartments — great value for weekly or monthly stays.
  • Ma Maison — French-Vietnamese boutique hotel with genuine character.

Thảo Điền (in Thu Duc City, formerly District 2)

The expat enclave. Villas, international restaurants, craft coffee, yoga studios. Feels like a different city.

Best for: Families, long-term stays, remote workers, people who need Western comfort.

Budget: Hotels from 800,000 VND. Serviced apartments from 18,000,000–25,000,000 VND/month.

Our picks:

  • Villa Song — boutique riverside hotel, pool, gardens. Genuinely special.
  • An Lam Retreats — luxury villa resort, feels like you left the city entirely.
  • Airbnb villas — spacious, pool access, quiet streets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best area to stay in Saigon for first-timers?

District 1, hands down. Specifically the Bến Thành / Nguyễn Huệ area puts you walking distance from the major sights, best street food, and the backpacker zone on Bùi Viện. You can walk to the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, and Notre-Dame from here. Plus Grab rides to anywhere else in the city are under 50,000 VND.

Is District 3 better than District 1 for hotels?

District 3 is where Saigonese actually hang out. It's cheaper (30–40% less for similar quality), has incredible local food along streets like Nguyễn Thiện Thuật and Võ Văn Tần, and feels less touristy. The tradeoff: you're a 10-minute Grab ride from the main sights instead of walking. If you've been to Saigon before or want a more local experience, District 3 is the move.

How much should I pay for a decent hotel in Saigon?

Budget: 300,000–500,000 VND ($12–20) gets you a clean room with AC and WiFi in District 1. Mid-range: 800,000–1,500,000 VND ($32–60) for boutique hotels with pools and breakfast. Luxury: 3–6 million VND ($120–240) for places like the Park Hyatt or Hotel des Arts. The sweet spot is the 1–1.5 million range — that's where Saigon's charming boutique hotels live.

Should I stay near Bùi Viện walking street?

Only if you want to party. Bùi Viện is loud until 2 AM every night — pumping music, street vendors, and cheap beer joints. It's great for one night out but terrible for sleeping. Stay a few blocks away on Đề Thám or Phạm Ngũ Lão for the same backpacker convenience minus the noise.
